Researching The Past

As I have begun researching Corrosion Corner, I have come across many places of interest. Several of the people I work with either worked in the Corner or flew airliners in and out of Miami International airport during the time the corner was chock full of old airplanes. So as I get into some of their stories, they tell me about all the “hang-outs” that the airline pilots, the flight attendants, the mechanics and such, visited. Johny Bryson’s Irish Pub was one such place. Bryson’s still exists though after I have told many of those around me where it is they say that was the old location of the 407 club. So I have more digging to do. But I am slowly compiling bunch of stories from many a person who lived the life of the corner rats and the adventures they had while doing so.

Miami International Airport’s northwest corner along 36th Street was known to many in the 1940s through the 1980s as Corrosion Corner, Cockroach Corner or to those who worked there simply The Corner. The airport having gone through several upgrades and renovations to meet the demand for space by the major and the new upstart airlines in the 1970’s and 1980’s had move many a rag-tag operator into its corners, the northwest corner being the most well-known. The airplanes that came to call the corner as home were old airliners that had lost their luster and sent here to work their final days as tramp freighters. There were big old piston radial engine aircraft such as the DC-4 and Constellations and turboprops like the Electra or worn out first generation Boeing 727s. From Miami they flew to locations throughout the Caribbean, Latin America and the World. I was where a pilot might find a job at the beginning of their career or be relegated to at or new the end of it.
